Wat Willem gemakshalve vergeet, is dat de mensen die die veiligheid jarenlang hebben bewaakt, nu in stilte de échte oorlog voeren. Het is makkelijk om op een kazerne stoere woorden te verkondigen, te poseren bij een Patriot-luchtverdedigingssysteem en je bewondering uit te spreken over het bouwen van meer drones. Maar waar blijft diezelfde betrokkenheid als het gaat om de veteranen die jarenlang hun leven op het spel hebben gezet? Die nu worstelen met PTSS, financiële problemen, kapotte gezinnen en een overheid die doet alsof hun missie eindigde toen ze het vliegtuig uitstapten.

Want laten we eerlijk zijn: zodra de parade voorbij is, de medailles uitgedeeld zijn en de camera’s uitstaan, verdwijnen deze mensen uit beeld. De ‘dankbaarheid’ blijkt niet meer dan een formaliteit. En terwijl Willem droomt van een opgepompte defensie-industrie, staat de echte frontlinie in Nederland: bij de voordeur van veteranen die vechten voor hun dagelijks bestaan.

Veteranen in Aktie waar echte helden het werk doen

Gelukkig zijn er mensen die wél zien waar het om draait. Mensen zoals Jordy Hilt en zijn team van Stichting Veteranen in Aktie. Geen praatjes, geen lintjes, maar daden. Zij vervullen wensen van veteranen en hun gezinnen, juist op momenten dat het leven hen even te veel wordt. Een rit in een supercar, een dagje dierentuin, een rondleiding op een vliegbasis kleine lichtpuntjes die voor deze gezinnen het verschil maken tussen opgeven en doorzetten.

En dat alles met een budget waar Willem waarschijnlijk nog geen band voor zijn koninklijke fiets van koopt. 21 wensen vervuld, puur dankzij hun netwerk en mensen met een hart op de juiste plek. Daarnaast maken ze ook nog eens films die het welzijn van veteranen vergroten, zoals het prachtige kinderboek ‘Een kast vol’, dat gezinnen helpt omgaan met PTSS.

Hoe wrang is het dan dat de koning spreekt over het produceren voor conflicten, terwijl er in zijn eigen land mensen kapot gaan aan de gevolgen van eerdere conflicten? Misschien moet hij eens minder drones besturen en meer luisteren naar de verhalen van de mensen die wéten wat oorlog betekent. Niet in theorie, maar in elke zenuw van hun lichaam.

De overheid stuurt militairen de wereld over als pionnen op een schaakbord, maar zodra ze terugkomen met gebroken stukken, kijkt men liever weg. “Bedankt voor je dienst, zoek het verder maar uit.” En nu wil Willem dus meer wapens, meer productie, meer voorbereidingen op toekomstige oorlogen. Maar wie ruimt straks weer de brokstukken op? Niet de koning, dat is zeker.

Als je als land zo nodig tot de tanden bewapend wil zijn, begin dan eens met het bewapenen van je veteranen tegen de strijd ná de missie: geef ze mentale steun, financiële zekerheid, en vooral erkenning die verder gaat dan loze woorden op Veteranendag.

Want vrede en veiligheid begint niet bij een nieuw wapencontract of een fancy drone. Het begint bij zorg voor de mensen die al gevochten hebben, zodat zij niet hun hele leven hoeven te boeten voor het feit dat zij deden wat hen werd opgedragen.

Als de overheid onze militairen als schietschijven gebruikt en weigert de scherven te helen, dan kunnen wij tenminste zorgen dat er iemand is die de stukken opraapt. Willem mag dan wel denken dat veiligheid uit een wapenfabriek rolt, maar wij weten beter. Veiligheid betekent ook dat je mensen opvangt als de strijd gestreden is. Dat je voorkomt dat de oorlog thuis verder woedt, in hoofden en harten.

Dus terwijl de koning druk is met zijn militaire speeltjes, laten wij zien wat echte loyaliteit betekent. Niet aan een vlag of een wapen, maar aan de mensen die we nooit zouden mogen vergeten.
